Beauty Booty: Bodacious Bras

by Rachel on 04/13/2010

A few weeks ago, it got ridiculously warm in Michigan — warm enough to wear a tank top in public. Amazing, right?! But it made me realize I needed to update my bra situation.

A little background: I just love lingerie. I have terrible lingerie karma though; as soon as I buy a gorgeous bra, I inevitably get dumped. It sucks. But I used to work at Victoria’s Secret. I was a “Certified Bra Specialist.” I actually loved working there because I think having a good bra is pretty important and I really loved helping people find the perfect one for them in the perfect size (cause, yeah, most women wear the wrong size). I also worked with the guy who would eventually become my other half and soul mate, David Brown. We would work the register in our matching black suits and people weren’t sure if we were related, or dating, or what. We’ve since determined that I’m basically the post-op tranny version of David.

So my recent bra trip was more about function than fantasy! I needed warm-weather bras. Because I used to work at VS, I know all the styles and I’m pretty picky about which ones I like. But I thought I’d share some of my favorites and my new summer obsession!

I used to always swear by the Body by Victoria shaping demi because it is a great everyday T-shirt bra.

It gives you these total, “Oh, I’m just the girl next door who suddenly started taking cattle hormones!” …like great boobs. Every time I wore it, my gay guy friends would be like, “Your boobs look awesome.” And my straight guy friends would just say, “Hm…I really like your T-shirt.” What, this old thing?! It’s sooo not the T-shirt.

Then I got to MSU and got all sorostastic and decided I needed more cleavage. I decided to upgrade (emphasis on the UP) to the bestselling push-up, the Very Sexy.

I was sold. Cause, well, Hey, girl, heyyy!

I mean, at times, the cleavage this bra produces actually makes my friends a little speechless, but…it’s fun!

Every girl needs a good strapless, so I went with the Very Sexy strapless.

It really stays up and it gives the best cleavage I’ve ever seen from a strapless. (So, not a ton, but better than going braless and looking like a 10-year-old boy.)

And I love their sports bras too! They have a really great, snug fit. This is what I wore for the marathon and for spinning because they really wick sweat.

Uniboob? Yes, it even happens to models…but the fun colors and sweat-wicking make up for it, so I’ll deal.

By now I have acquired a pretty ridiculous bra wardrobe, but last month, I wanted to get a new Very Sexy push-up because I really just like my boobs rockin’ everywhere, in lots of fun colors. Unfortunately, they had no good colors in my size. Luckily, I discovered the new Body by Victoria push-up.

OMG. This bra is amazing! It has the cleavage of the Very Sexy, but the more natural look of the Body by Victoria. The effect is the most bodacious boobs ever. I seriously feel like a pin-up girl in this one. Delicious.

But what I really wanted for summer was a racerback. I like my strapless, but it leaves me more flat chested than I’d like. If I’m wearing a low-cut tank to any place where I might end up meeting a cute guy (which is a lot of places!) I don’t want to look like my little brother. I figured a racerback was the solution. I found a Body by Victoria racerback but it wasn’t a push-up. Hmm…trade-off. Then I found the answer to all my problems: the basic cotton push-up.

VS totally neglects this line of bras, which is why I never tried them. That’s a shame because they are awesome! First of all, they cost half of what a normal bra at VS costs. Second, they are just as comfy and curvy as the Body by Victoria (I think the difference is the cup is a little less molded and the lining is slightly thinner). But best of all: they all come with a little hook-and-eye on the straps so they can all be made into a racerback!

This bra has totally made my summer! I can now wear cute tank tops and have great cleavage. Plus, it’s not so pricey, so I don’t have to worry as much about abusing it during the sultry (sweaty) dog days of summer.

So yeah, since I’m a “bra specialist” — one who used to have to wear those hideous functional wide strap bras to deal with my formerly huge boobs — I thought I’d share my selections! Whichever bra you choose though, I have to say: please do not buy white. White bras are the bane of my existence. Girls used to like, cry in the dressing rooms but I would not allow it. They’d get all, “But I need it for white T-shirtsssss! Nude bras are ugggllllyyy!” I concur they are ugly (white bras are too; they look like orthopedic shoes to me). Still, match your bra to your skin, not your shirt. Just like avoiding visible panty lines, you gotta make some sacrifices. Otherwise, yes…I’m silently judging you.

Everyday is a miracle bra day for me! Love VS. Never tried their sports bras, I am a huge fan of Lululemon, definitely worth checking out.

I need new bras sooo badly! Problem is since I fall in the DD category good bras are so damn expensive. Maybe I am just buying the wrong bras from VS though and I should give it another shot.

Great post, Rachel. You are right on about the cotton push up. I still use the cotton bras I bought from VS many years ago.

Rebecca, I am in the same situation as you with respect to bra/cup size. I love VS, but unfortunately I think sometimes they are not marketing their products to people whose cup sizes run over (and including) DD like you and me. I had heard that Nordstrom’s also offers bra-fittings and tried one out for free. The bras they sell ARE expensive (> $50) but you at least get an idea of what you should really be wearing. I made the decision to buy three on my flimsy student budget and I think it is the best decision I ever made. Do try bra-fitting Nordstrom’s even if you do not buy anything. Honestly though, bras in sizes DD and over will be expensive for the right fit they give you.
And I am not sure if you are also looking at sports bras, but I gave Champion Powerback underwire a try and I think its great for running, even long-distances.

I am obsessed with lingerie, it is one of my few girlie weaknesses.

I have to say, I am not a huge fan of victoria’s secret because they don’t sell As in most of their stores. I will say the few bras I have from there can produce amazing effects. For smaller girls out there, I love the Elle McPherson Intimates line and Aerie by American Eagle.

I will use your advise and risk a catalog order, cause damn!

@Cal_runner — Thanks for the detailed point on DD bras. I completely agree that they ARE expensive, but it’s REALLY worth it. I mean, the wrong size bra (or a flimsy, unsupportive bra) can throw off your posture and cause back pain. Simply choosing the right bra and spending the money can do wonders for how you look and feel. (Oprah just did another episode about this and featured all these like DD+ women whose lives were changed by the first show on the topic.)

@Rebecca — I think the Body by Victoria full coverage bra is great for bigger chests. I’ve also heard really good things about the BioFit, although it’s not my favorite. If you go into the store, ask to get measured and then try on the bra box. You can literally try on every bra they carry and see what you like — and a good sales person can recommend the best ones for your needs!

I love the VS cotton push up. I normally don’t buy bras from there since as a paltry B cup there’s not a lot of pushing you can do for these girls that a $13 Target bra can’t do, but I had some $10 off Secret Rewards cards a few weeks ago so I decided to buy a couple new bras there. I loved the prints of the cotton ones and had been having the same tank top issue as you. I needed a racerback but hated the plain, ugly ones I’d seen. This bra was the perfect solution! Glad to see someone else is enjoying it. I also can’t wait to check out some of the bras from the new Pout collection that are all under $30. http://www2.victoriassecret.com/collection/index.cfm?&rfnbr=6938&cgname=OSBRPUNTZZZ&cgnbr=OSBRPUNTZZZ&page=all

I love the Victoria’s Secret, Perfect One Full Coverage bra. I recently just bought one of their sports bras last week. It is washed and planning to try it out this week.

Thanks for reminding me that women with boobs too small for push-up bras (like me) are as unsexy as ten-year-old boys. It always makes me, hardly even a 36A, feel great to hear B and C and D cups whine about being “flat-chested.”

Theresa April 13, 2010 at 4:03 PM

Wow, I was literally planning on asking you this question myself today. “Being gifted in the chest department drives me and my upper back crazy when I run, any advice?”

But I don’t think you’re in any better of a position than I am! I read this review a while ago, but was apprehensive, I guess. So I thought I would share it with you, I think i will invest in one very soon!

Rachel April 13, 2010 at 4:53 PM

Hey Alexa — I’m so sorry for making it seem like I equate being flat-chested with being unsexy. I meant it as a way to poke fun at the fact that strapless bras suck and that without the help of a push-up, I don’t have as much up top. (Seriously, whenever my mom sees me braless or in a sports bra, she always reminds me.) I didn’t mean to be rude or insensitive and I apologize for that.

This article made me smile because it was actually the Spartanette that clued me in on the Nude Bra/White Shirt memo… I know that side note would find its way in this post!

Rachel April 13, 2010 at 5:25 PM

Ha! Love that you remember that…it also made its way into the book!!

Kari April 13, 2010 at 6:31 PM

As your previous manager, my best insight is: “Can we talk about nude?”

Carla April 14, 2010 at 6:20 AM

I love the very sexy line and i swear by that strapless! Have you tried the VS miraculous push up? Its pretty intense, I like to call it my $50 boob job! However i feel like its false advertisment . . . guess thats the point, right?
