You Spin Me Right Round!!

by Rachel on 01/20/2010

Good evening!!

First, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for all the good wishes this morning after I posted my spinning playlist! I was nervous but you guys got me pumped! (PS Becca…there was like a sigh of appreciation when Gaga came on and we talked about her awesomeness for the whole song.)

I headed to the studio early so I could play around with the bikes and work out any issues. Burning a CD was the biggest issue! CD burning is the most archaic technology. It doesn’t matter how advanced we are with MP3s and shit…you try to put songs on a CD and even the fastest, newest computer sounds like a plane taking off…a plane filled with dying cows. Ridic!

Luckily, I had my tunes ready. The studio where I am teaching is private, and I am working with a PT’s clients, so she has just eight bikes. I set them up in a half-circle with my bike at the front.

My “audition” class was five people; four beginners, and one experienced. That forced me to design a workout that was good for all levels, and that was more challenging. It meant I had to stay on my toes — I couldn’t bullshit my way through the class. Not that I would be bullshit about spinning, but it meant I had to know my ish.

I was anxious all week. I knew I had a really good chance of being hired, provided I didn’t blow it. When the ladies finaly started rolling in, I was so excited! They were all nervous, but that helped me relax. I helped them set up their bikes and then we got rolling!

I have to say, they really got the hang of it right away. My big thing was, I didn’t want to look out and see miserable faces, but they weren’t. I tried my best to make conversation and be engaging, but it was hard because I don’t know them yet, so I was wracking my brain for possible topics. All that came to mind was Heidi Montag’s plastic surgery, so I just thought, “Forget it.” But luckily, the workout and talking about the positions, the music, etc. was engaging enough. I was so impressed. They were working it, pushing it….and at one point I even saw them grooving a little, which is like the BIGGEST COMPLIMENT EVER!

The class went by so fast, at the end I had to check my watch to be sure I had actually worked them for 45 minutes. I was worried I had forgotten a song, but we got it all in. We cooled down and stretched and chatted…they were all happy with the class! Apparently some of them had had low expectations. They thought it would be too hard and miserable…and the experienced woman thought it would be too easy since there were so many beginners. I was definitely wanting to impress her, so hearing that she liked it (and that they all liked it!) was a really good feeling.

So…I’m HIRED! This is honestly so exciting for me. I always said I wished I could do spinning as a sport because I love it so much, but it’s like…DUH! Teaching!!! I can’t believe I get to do this a few times a week. It’s truly amazing to me that I can get paid to do something I’m so happy to do anyway!

We haven’t set a concrete schedule yet. It’s looking like two classes a week for sure, and more based on demand. Even though it’s a private studio, the owner is liking the idea of opening it to people with a sort of punch card system so that non-gym-goers can come just to spin. Since I secretly dream of owning my own spin studio and teaching all day long, I LOVE this! I am willing to teach pretty much as much as people want to come, and I am also down to do private classes. This means that all ya’ll need to plan a trip to Grand Blanc, MI (it’s not that cool, but I am a real fun girl) so you can spin with me!! I feel like if I can continue to be a good instructor, I can fill those bikes several times a week, and maybe even more than once a day.

I’m SO excited! Getting paid to write…getting paid to work out?! Now if I could only get paid to sex and cook…oh wait! That’s called getting married. HA…I’m getting there…living the dream, I tell you.

This is too cool, congrats again. I’ve always wanted to teach a fitness class. I remember being small and watching my Mom teach step aerobic classes.

Congratulations. I went to my first spin class tonight ever, and yours sounds way better. Only one other person showed up, and the instructor didn’t talk to us at all, even though it was just the three of us. Maybe she should take lessons from you.

That is awesome! I might actually try spinning if I were closer or the only place in my town wasn’t my former employer. Congrats! :)

CONGRATS!! I knew you’d get the job. No one is more qualified from experience and music taste than you! Can’t wait to hear all about your classes!

Kate January 20, 2010 at 9:02 PM

Hahaha Congrats, totally relate re the only thing you can think of to talk about is Heidi’s surgery. Sadly that’s all my blank dull mid week mind can think about at the moment, and it’s depressing me!

Awesome! Good work landing the new spinning job. I’d love to take your spin class, you have so much passion for it! Per usual, lots of serious laughs while reading- “get paid to sex and cook…oh wait! That’s called getting married.”

YAY!! I knew you could do it, and I am so proud of you! Can’t wait to come home to the GB and spin with you as the instructor this time!

So spinning is not just 45 minutes of wanting to vomit? I see the classes at my gym and yikes … I’m pretty whiny anyway but that just looks like HURT.

Yay you anyway! I’m sure the music helped with the vomit-worthy pain :)

Congrats on the new gig! I have only tried spinning once, and the music was so loud, I was afraid my eardrums were going to rupture. Plus I just didn’t “get” the feel of the bike – I never felt like it was adjusted right (although an experienced spin instructor got me set up).

AndrewENZ January 21, 2010 at 4:45 PM

Congrats. It looked like the hard work paid off.
