Lemme Work It: 1/12/10

by Rachel on 01/12/2010

Good evening, friends!

Well, today I got right into the swing of things, which helped with how disoriented I felt. First, I was lucky enough to get a last-minute hair appointment! When my hair needs to be done, it turns into this totally massive pillow-like halo and is completely unmanageable, so I was secretly planning to not leave the house until I could get it straightened. Umm…good thing it could be done today, otherwise I might have never gone out! Before the appointment, I had lunch at Subway. I go through Subway phases, and I haven’t been in one in a while, so my roast beef sandwich really hit the spot. But they have Jared back as their spokesperson, and that kinda made me not want to eat there. He just proves that you can lose as much weight as you want, but if you’re a tool, you’re a tool at every size!

After lunch and the hair appointment…I braved my first post-marathon workout! I knew a little light cardio would help with the soreness, and I wanted to get my muscles warm so I could stretch. I put on my colorful Nikes (!!!) and hit the gym. First, I walked a mile on the track…slowly. Seriously, I felt like a little old lady! I am very stiff, so I am walking a little funny. I have shin splints as well, but overall, using stairs and sitting and standing are the hardest part. (I hate that kind of post-workout pain when you have to ease into a position to pee, and that’s my life right now!) All these people were running by and I was so tempted to run but I knew it would be something I’d regret. I just wanted to wear a sign that says, “I AM WALKING SLOW BECAUSE I JUST RAN 26.2 MILES! I SWEAR!!” After the walk I did 20 minutes on the elliptical and that felt really good. My body hurts but it did feel good to move it again; plus the music got me pumped and cheered up.

Then it was time to stretch. ALL I HAVE WANTED TO DO FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS IS STRETCH! I knew it would hurt, but in a good way.

Well. I don’t know about “in a good way.” I was grimacing and fighting back all the things I wanted to say; if I had, it would have been like the chest-waxing scene in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” Wow. I didn’t know stretching could be so painful. When I reached out to touch my toes and stretch my hamstrings, I was gasping in pain. Unbelievable. I am going to have to do a lot of work over the next few days because that is just so not OK! However, I noticed as I walked to the locker room, my gait was more normal and I felt very loose. Woo! Progress!!

Since we are post-vacation, we have limited groceries, and I was so hungry after the gym. Not the best combo! I took a “lesser evil” approach to dinner and put together a bagel with a scrambled egg, melted cheese, and slice of ham, and an orange.

I still have sleepy munchies so I’m having an apple now, hoping they’ll pass. (I don’t think it will; I can see the trail mix from here and it looks like it needs to be eaten! Goddamnit!) I’m usually not one of those “I’ll start my diet tomorrow,” kinda girls, but I am in a transition today, and I’m kinda giving myself a break. Tomorrow I am starting a modified version of Phase 1 of the Fat Flush Plan. I’m so over carbs right now…SO over them! It’s like, OK, thanks, you served your purpose, but I’m ready to eat a little cleaner for a week or two! Greens…I have missed you! In terms of working out, it’s going to be a bit of trial and error for this week. I am planning to start the Core Fusion challenge on Friday and I’m trying to be positive about a less crazy-intense cardio schedule for a few weeks as my body recovers from the marathon! I think it will actually be a good thing in the long run — I’ve got great cardio health now, but I’m excited to be stronger and leaner.

I realized I missed a weekend’s worth of wedding shows, so tonight I’m firing up the DVR, catching up on my e-mails, and doing my nails! Then I am going to bed EARLY and hopefully sleeping WELL! I have that feeling you have when you miss two days of school and then it’s the night before you go back and you feel so restless, you’re actually really ready for it. I think that means the transition is over!

Have a good night!

It sounds like you are on a mission! I wish I had you energy and drive. I’m going to try to be better as I recover from rotatorcuff surgery. I have a long way to go. Keep doing what you’re doing! Thanks for the inspiration.

That fat flush plan looks awesome! You really sold it to me. You should get paid. Haha. Great job on the marathon btw. That’s such an accomplishment.

I put my thing down flip it and reverse it…

Seriously, you rock my running socks — I only did the half marathon and I’m still not ready for my first workout! You.are.a.rock.star.

Hi Rachel, just a question on the Fat Flush Plan which sounds really similar to South Beach… How do you find your energy level on Phase 1?
I did South Beach before but wasn’t working out so that wasn’t an issue, but since I’m in the process of learning how to run I don’t want to go all crazy with my diet.
I also find that I’m just really hungry when I finish my ‘runs’, just having a hard time staying on track. I would like to loose another 10-15lbs which I think would help me with running.

Hey Claudia….I’d say that my energy level on Phase 1 is pretty good! There have been some times where I’ve honestly been hungry, mores than the other times I’ve done it; not sure why. She doesn’t recommend working out more than walking during Phase 1…I’ve had enough energy to spin and hit the gym, but I can’t imagine going for a run without more carbs in my system. The reason I am doing this now is because I have to take a break from running for a few weeks so this is good timing.

Losing weight does help with running, but I went to a nutritionist back in August before I started marathon training because I wanted to lose weight while training…and found out I had to eat 1800 calories a day on NON RUNNING days to lose weight…and most of those cals from carbs! On running days, I was eating more like 2200 (or more). I was shocked I could eat so much!! Soooooo many carbs! But now I’m seriously carbed OUT which is why I decided to do this plan.

So long story short, I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re running more than three miles at a time; I think you’d get lightheaded and be so hungry you’d just hate your life. However, Phase II or III might be something worth looking into!
