Hail Mary: 3 Mile Training Run (The Last!)

by Rachel on 01/07/2010

Happy Thursday afternoon!!

As much anticipation as I have this week, it’s actually gone by rather quickly and I feel like I’ve kept myself really busy — busier than I maybe would have liked. The main thing was the fact that my Blackberry bit the dust on Monday night. I took it to the Verizon store and they told me it had water damage. Now, I have damaged a lot of technology in my life, but in this case, I actually did not. But what could I do? The water damage strip was pink, so I had to get a new phone. The last time I had to get a new BB, it was a little hassle, but nothing terrible. This time it was a total debacle. Besides the fact that not having a phone is a pain in the ass, spending hours on the phone with technicians trying to get it activated and my e-mail, browser, and contacts all set was just WAY more of an ordeal than it needed to be…and it was an extra six hours of my life I’d like back!

But thank goodness I’m all set with working technology not a moment too soon…I need everything in order before I head to Florida for the marathon!

I’ve been running errands for the past couple days so I have the essentials. I was debating what to wear on Sunday. The weather in FL is unseasonably cold right now. Of course it is. I’m happy to run in 40 degree weather, but I was hoping the other days I would there would be sunny and nice. Nope. Not the case.

I wasn’t sure what to wear for the marathon. (I’m sure you can tell that I’d put a lot of thought into this.) I needed something functional, obviously, but for nearly five hours of running, I want to look my best. Fact: I have better workouts in cute clothes and good hair than scrubby clothes and bedhead. Confidence is a serious thing here, and I’m not taking any chances! I also knew I needed to wear performance gear. I do most of my workouts now in cotton tees or tanks, but I’m gearing up to get pretty wet, and I need something to wick away that sweat. I was hoping I could find a new track jacket too; I love the Danskin ones I’ve been running in, but they are getting seriously ratty. So I needed performance gear that wasn’t too expensive…oh, and it all had to match the white-girl Asics. THAT was really bugging me. I wanted to wear bold colors that made me feel BA! I got the most fun highlighter-yellow sports bra at Victoria’s Secret yesterday (on sale for $14 BTW)…but I can’t pair that color with my granny shoes!

Luckily…Target saved the day! Thank goodness for their Champion line. And they had workout gear sales which is ALWAYS exciting! I got a brand-new pair of my favorite black bootcut pants on sale for $15. (They are never as perfect as the first time you wear them.) Fun fact: I always buy my workout pants in “Tall” even though I am definitely not; nothing drives me more crazy than workout pants that aren’t long enough to cover my shoes properly. I tried on a white, silky moisture-wicking tank which was perfect; I like it because it is long, and I hate workout tops that are too short!

So then I found a moisture-wicking purple track jacket…hmm…bright enough to make me feel like myself…but would still match the Asics…um, seemed like a win! When I tried it on, it fit great, and the color was really fun, but the shoulders were a little weird. They were, like…puffy!?! It was bizarre. They seemed almost princessy, and I decided it was a too weird and a no-go. But then I thought, Wait. It’s the Disney marathon! If there’s ever a day to be princessy…this might be it! So I bought it, and I’m really happy I did.

The color in the photo is kinda weird, but in person, it is a really nice purple! Should I get “SheddingIt.com” bedazzled on the back? Juuuust kidding. (Although I bet Preston would love if we got a Bedazzler!)

OK with the outfit set, it was just time to run! I did my second 3-mile training run on Tuesday; same as usual…decent run, lots of stretching. Today was my very last one! Right as I entered the track, my Shuffle died; I could have put on my Touch (I come bearing so much technology now; ridiculous I know) but I decided to enjoy the run for what it was and not distract myself with any music. And it was lovely! I spent a lot of time visualizing the race and thinking about how great it’s going to be. I’m approaching it like a party. I just want to rock out and enjoy myself as much as I can. When my family catches sight of me from the sidelines, I want to look like I’m cruising along and having the time of my life, not like I’m struggling. I’ve achieved that kinda flow before, and I’d love to have it happen again. Thinking this way is relaxing my mind. It’s not something to get through; I’ve worked for it, so it’s something I want to enjoy every step of the way.

After the run, I dry humped the foam roller and stretched out a lot. As I was sitting there stretching, I looked at my Asics, thinking, “Just one more run with you, ladies!”

The rest of my today is all about packing so I am ready to leave tomorrow. All my training is officially DONE, and I’m as ready as I can get. (I guess? They tell me? It’s still funny to me.) Now it’s time to just go and do the damn thing. My next run will be 26.2 miles!

Good luck on your run. I have actually looked at those workout pants at Target. I was debating on whether or not to get them. I guess you have helped that decision. :)

I think you should definitely have a Bedazzler Fed-Exed to you in time for Preston to have a ball with your jacket before the marathon–when else will you ever have a better excuse than “I need to be Bedazzled cause I’m running a marathon”?

You are going to kill that marathon–have fun and I’ll be rooting for you!

Ahhh! I’m so excited for you and I’m totally FOR advertisement of sheddingit.com… more people need to be following your crazy self!

P.S. I heard that if you DO drop your cell or other small electronic device in water you should put it in dry rice for a few hours or overnight and it dries it right out and gets it working again. Never tried it personally but lots of folks SWEAR by it. Hope it works if your next cell decides to go swimming in the toilet or something ;-)
