It seems like summer wasn’t that long ago, but clearly, the bountiful produce has gone away with the long days and warm weather. I realized that all I’ve been eating lately is apples and bananas. Blah, blah, BORING. It’s time to go with the change of the season, and buy winter fruit!
Citrus fruits. Kids used to get oranges in their stockings because they were a delicacy, so for that reason I always think of oranges as a Christmas thing. But really, oranges, tangerines, clementines, and grapefruit are great this time of year. And they have the Vitamin C you need to stay healthy through the rest of the winter months! Sure, you can just peel and eat, but don’t forget about how great oranges can taste with stir-fry and other Asian dishes.
Cranberries. They are a classic Thanksgiving food, but that doesn’t mean you should only eat them once a year! And don’t limit yourself to dried (although Craisins are great too). A bag of fresh cranberries costs about $2 and homemade cranberry sauce is delicious with breakfast or dinner. Plus, they pack a lot of antioxidants.
Pears. I love pears. My favorite way to eat them is cut in chunks and drizzled with almond butter and plain yogurt, but another great way to add them into your diet is to put them in a salad! Pears taste great with cheese, so add them to a salad with crumbled goat cheese, walnuts, and some grilled chicken instead of your usual Caesar.
Kiwis. A friend of mine told me a story one time about the dumbest guy he knew. The guy was so dumb he mentioned the “baby coconuts” that had been in the house…um, turns out, he was talking about KIWIS. I looooove that! Anyway, kiwis are a really good source of Vitamin C and fiber. You can have them in coconut oatmeal for a good winter breakfast!
Pomegranates. Pom wonderful! The seeds are a great snack, and are also a great salad topping.
Persimmons. OK this is my winter fruit to try! I keep seeing them at the store and on blogs, and I definitely need to just go ahead and eat one. Like pears, they are good in salads, so I may just go that route!
Who cares if it’s freezing outside? Be juicy!
