Last week there was discussion on Twitter about good cooking music. Lately, I’ve been building a good collection of tunes to cook to, so I thought I’d share!
There are many different routes you can take when you’re cooking, and it’s all a matter of taste. Personally, I like something that’s relaxing, but still upbeat. I also like foreign music when I’m cooking, French especially. Who knows what they are saying? Who cares?! Since France and Italy are known for great food, I figure cooking to their music is good vibes!
I can’t really make a playlist for cooking music, because this is one area where I just listen to whole albums. All these albums are on one playlist, and I usually just hit shuffle, unless I’m in a particular mood!
If you want something jazzy (that you can also play during dinner)…
Waldeck
The Triplets of Belleville soundtrack
Kad Achouri
MC Solaar (French rap…tres baller)
If you’re in a “French Women Don’t Get Fat” mood…
Carla Bruni
If you’re making homemade pasta…
iTunes The Best 100 Classic Italian Songs
Mina (“Passion Flower” is a favorite)
If you are making American comfort food or having a hipsterish dinner party…
Duffy
Amy Winehouse
If you’re chopping fall vegetables…
George Winston (Forest)
If you’re making something classy/using any strong cheeses…
iTunes The 50 Most Essential Pieces of Classical Music
La Boheme
If you’re baking treats…
Karen O and the Kids Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack
If you’re baking Christmas treats…
The Hotel Cafe Presents Winter Songs (one of my favorite albums ever!)
If you’re baking because you’re working through something…
Bruce Brubaker (Metamorphosis 1-5) This is the most gorgeous, affecting 20 minutes of music I’ve heard in a long time!
For me, cooking is such an experience to enjoy, and music only makes it better! I’m always down for new tunes, so, please, share with the class…what are your favorite cooking songs/albums?

I might have to add a few of these songs to my baking mix (arr, arr).

Love this post! What I listen to depends on what I’m making too, so glad to know I’m not crazy (or the only crazy one) that does this
Overall cooking favorites include the Amelie film soundtrack, Edith Piaf (I have a best of and feel all insouciant and Parisian when I stir along with her) or random French rap on the French tip, any of the Buena Vista Social Club albums (good for slapdashy everyday cooking only, because I start dancing and end up forgetting to add ingredients), and Estelle when I’m cooking home alone–I won’t subject anyone to my hideous singing.

Ohh good call on the Amelie soundtrack, I will download that today! That reminds me, the “Chocolat” soundtrack is really good too!!
I love this list. I also love listening to The Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack when I bake. I’m also a big Chris Botti fan for any time of year. If you want something a little more funky, I also enjoy The Meters. It can get sorta elevator-ish, but I can also dance to it while I’m stirring and mixing.

I love this post! I really love the idea of themed music based on what you’re cooking. So great! I’m about to do some Christmas baking and this will be a great help
