I can’t believe how fast November went! It’s already the last month of 2009?!
So, it’s time for new goals. First, a review of the November goals…
Pilates 3 x a week. Ugh, FAIL. I did Pilates five times the entire month. I know what the problem is. I like to do it after I run, but by the time I get home after a run, I’m all sweaty and just want to shower. I don’t like doing it on off days, I don’t like doing it at night…ugh, just so many excuses, I know. I’m not making it a goal in December, because until the running situation changes, I know I’m just going to struggle. I’m going to do Pilates, I know I am…but I’m not making it a goal.
Move more. This goal went well! I didn’t stick completely to plan, but I do feel like I took more breaks and walks, especially when I was in DC and NYC. That made me excited to move to a city again — it’s just so much easier to move around and walk when you aren’t in suburbia!
Healthy travels. This goal was a TOTAL WIN!!!! I exceeded my expectations and did great with it. I also feel like this was the tipping point for me, when healthy, in-moderation living just really started to become second nature. I enjoyed myself and really didn’t have to overthink food and fitness — everything just came naturally! And…my jeans are baggy! I’m so, so happy about everything — more about my head than my ass though, really. It’s a huge confidence boost to know that my healthy habits don’t only work under a given set of circumstances — and that travel and guy drama aren’t going to throw me off course.
Sooo…December! Well, because it’s Monster Month, I am keeping my goals to a minimum. Um, running 20 miles and surviving the holidays is a goal in and of itself. So, here’s what I got:
Roast a Whole Chicken. Um…I’ve just been really wanting to do this! Oddly enough, Self magazine had a recipe for roasting a whole chicken in the December issue! I actually think I am going to use this recipe, which I saw on one of the Giada DVDs I bought on Black Friday. Sounds delicious and doable, so I’m all about it.
And…that’s ALL! I think there are going to be some big changes in my life in January and February, and, quite honestly, I want to enjoy a holiday month with my family without a lot of pressure or stress. I don’t want to feel like I “have” to do anything except bake treats, write, make funny videos, hang out with my family and friends, holiday, run long distances, and roast a chicken. Oh, wait…that’s a lot of things! But all are things that are so happy and rewarding in and of themselves; I don’t need to make it a goal to do them. Anyway, I have big plans for 2010, so I guess this is just a tapering of goals.
P.S. So excited because my October goal of “networking” led to me writing for a new paper in Ann Arbor called “The Bohemian.” I just got the first two issues in the mail and it’s so exciting to see my work IN PRINT since I’ve been writing online for so long! Here’s my article on apples from the September issue (the recipe may look familiar). See…goals!!
What’s on YOUR December list?!

Hi Rachel!! Longtime silent reader!! I have been using a ton of your tips and guidance over the past few months of reading your blog!! I love your style!!
Anyways…i have been making goals each month and like you, they are not always met…! I have been calling them “Aims” instead of goals though. so they are something that i am aiming for…instead of accomplishing. does that make sense?
Ok….so my goals:
*and take note i am going to mexico for a week with my boyf and his family, so i made them pretty easy/realistic
1. lose 2-3 lbs (i have lost 20 solid pounds this year…and those extra 5 are just killer).
2. eat carefully (less handfuls of this and that)
3. drink more water
4. be nicer to myself, peers, family
Oooh “Aims,” I can get behind that!! Love the “eat carefully” aim…it’s so easy to take those little bites, right!? I bet that will help you with your 2-3 lb aim though!! Keep me posted on how it goes!
Hi Rachel! I’m a new follower of your blog. I think making monthly goals is a fantastic idea. It’s much easier to stay focused on a task that is broken out into parts. It makes the goals feel attainable.
I have given myself a “Get My Shit Together” 30-day challenge. Although I wasn’t very specific or as you would say “SMART” with my goals it is a starting point for me to get it together.
Anyway, happy December and good luck with your goals!!
