The Motivation Conversation

by Rachel on 10/29/2009

From what I can tell (and have personally experienced) something a lot of people struggle with is finding the motivation to be healthy! It’s like you know you should…and you know you could…but ya just don’t!

One easy way to make working out or hitting the grocery store for healthy foods feel like less of a chore is to treat it like a privilege. You may not see it like that, but it really is! If you have a healthy heart and a pair of decent sneakers, you are lucky. Just ask the person who is injured or who can’t afford new shoes. If you have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, you are way more fortunate than millions of people. Before you get all, “Oh, my life is so hard, I have to go use my pricey gym membership where people might see me and judge the size of my ass,” just consider that there are tons of people out there – with bigger asses, by the way – who would love to have access to a cardio machine and some free weights. And lest you get dramatic and in a, “But I don’t waaaaannnnnt to walk home and carry all those groceries” fit, just consider that you might some day find yourself in a situation when you truly can’t buy bags full of healthy groceries!

I’m not trying to give you a “You’re so blessed” guilt trip. I’m just suggesting you change the conversation you have with yourself.

  • Instead of saying, “I should go to the gym today,” say, “I get to go to the gym today!”
  • Rather than, “I hate getting up early,” try, “I get to be up when the sun comes up!”
  • Don’t say, “I have to go grocery shopping.” Replace it with, “I want to go grocery shopping!”

It’s so simple, but just a little turn of phrase like that can have a real impact on your attitude! Give it a try today – replace all your Debbie Downer complaints with more positive, appreciative comments. And enjoy your lovely life filled with opportunities – because that’s exactly what you have!

Great advice! I have some friends that complain non-stop and I dread being around them. When I am about to bust out a complaint, I stop and think how annoyed I get when I have to listen to them and then I shut my trap.

Positive thinking is powerful, as they say.

Love the advice! I need to give this a try to motivate myself to even head downstairs to run on my treadmill in the basement!

Good advice. Another tip I read recently, which I’ve been trying to put into practice is telling myself I want to do something, rather than I need to. “I want to go to the gym”…although it might not feel genuine at first, it’s putting things in motion to believe…
