Healthy Weekend: Get Involved with World Food Day

by Rachel on 10/16/2009

Happy Friday!!

Today, October 16, is World Food Day. It is meant to increase awareness and understanding of world hunger.

I talk a lot about food — good food, healthy food, crappy food. We’re lucky enough to have the option to choose our foods. It says a lot that our biggest problem is, “Hmm, how much saturated fat is in these granola bars? Maybe I should get different ones…” We know that in reality, we can choose to be picky or give up certain foods because we’re that fortunate, and we’re never going to actually be without any food.

So, this weekend, take 30 minutes to help those in need. There are many ways to get involved, but food banks are more in demand than ever, given the state of the economy. Check out Feeding America to find one near you, and find out how you can donate time or food. Even though most of us feel broke um, all the time, we all have more to give than we think.

Have a great day!

You are so right. I get hung up on how much protein is in this or that. I can be quite selfish. I was just talking to a friend of mine who was telling me she went on a trip to help children in Mexico w/ her church and said she did not have a single vegetable the entire trip. And neither did the children she was there to help. It’s time to take action.

While I was at the gym today I watched some tv and they were talking about world food day. Apparently some schools are having nutritionists go there so they can prepare (and start having) decent breakfasts, lunches and snacks for the kids. This makes me so happy. :)

I saw this article today as I was catching up with your posts (I’m behind from my weekend at home without a comp!) and I thought it went well with this post!

Reasons why it is great:
1. This person is not only revitalizing his community, but he’s helping others in need with locally grown produce and instilling pride in his neighborhood.
2. It’s about Flint! Rach, go on a little journey and find this place!!
