Healthy Weekend: Be a Babe in Toyland

by Rachel on 07/31/2009

[Caution: If, like me, you went to Catholic school and still carry that lovely guilt, or can't make it through an episode of "Sex and the City," without turning red, you might not want to read this post. This is probbbbbbably NSFW.]

Today, friends, we’re talking about sex toys.

(Bow chicka wow wow.)

I’m all about building a good self-image. Hitting the gym makes me feel sexy and alive. But so does something else. This weekend, how about you get the same effect by swapping your workout for a twurk out?

This month’s “Glamour” had a big article about how common sex toys have become. From sex toy parties to Sex and the City, they have gone mainstream–50 percent of women are using them. When I read that, I was pretty surprised. Half the women I know? Well damn.

I’m easily swayed by peer pressure, so I started doing some research .And I see now why sex toys have gotten so popular–they are cute, affordable, accessible (order online–no creepy sex stores!), safe, and healthy.

Part of the surge in popularity may be that young ladies are no longer pressured to be in in serious relationships. And in between hook-ups (or to keep yourself from making Poor Life Decisions), a little battery-powered buzz can’t hurt, right?

You can use them alone or with someone. So if you have the opportunity to introduce a new little friend to your big friend in the bedroom, go for it! Sex boosts your immune system and relieves stress. There are plenty of toys designed for couple’s use, and most guys are down with anything that’s going to make a girl come hither.

And if you’re single–or attached!–why not sex solo this weekend? It’s a great way to explore your body and learn what you like and what works. It’s an STD free way to get off, and it has known health benefits: increased endorphins, stress relief, lower risk of yeast infections, and it works as a natural sleep sedative. (Now that’s what I call getting tucked in.)

You can get to know the palm of your hand, or you can experience the joy of a toy. I didn’t even really know what was out there these days. Enter Babeland, one of the best sex toy Web sites on the whole blessed Internet.

According to the site, the founders “opened the first Babeland store in 1993 in response to the lack of women-friendly sex shops in Seattle. The store offered top quality products, a pleasant place to shop, and most of all information and encouragement to women who wanted to explore their sexuality. The store’s popularity with both women and men eventually led to two more stores in New York and one in Los Angeles, as well as a thriving Web site.”

Two chicks making a living off getting us off? LOVE IT!

Right now Babeland has a contest going called “Summer of Love.” They are giving away hundreds of dollars in sex toys this summer to some lucky bloggers (and readers)! Bloggers can enter by posting their sex toy wish list on a blog, which I’m going to go ahead and do right now at the risk of becoming a Google/job interview horror story.

I spent a lot of time on Babeland reading reviews, and here’s my list.

1. Naughtibod. I love my ipod. You know I make new playlists all the time. I cried when my last ipod broke. I love my ipod so much I went dressed as a sexy ipod for Halloween one year! But this geek treat just got a whole lot sexier than I could ever make it. Plug this vibe into your pod and then turn up the tunes. It pulses in time to the music. WHAT?!?!?! What genius invented this?? If I win it, expect a verrrrry special playlist. Please, Mr. DJ, turn the record on.

2. The Iconic Ring. (OMG I can’t believe I am writing about a cock ring on my blog. Or that I just  said “cock ring.” Oh well. Cock ring! Hi, mom! Also, my mom was amazing the other day and read a brief line in my blog talking about pretzel Goldfish. There were pretzel Goldfish waiting for me in the kitchen when I got home. I can’t decide if I hope the same thing happens with the Iconic Ring.) Anyway, this little guy seems like it could be fun for everyone. It’s like a buzzing bee. Bzzz! Bzzz! Bzzzz!

3. SaSi. “The closest you’ll get to cunnilingus from a vibrator, thanks to the undulating nub. Just like a real partner, SaSi vibrator is capable of giving a different experience every time, and like a good partner, it will learn and remember the movements you like best.  SaSi is loaded with ‘Sensual Intelligence’ which enables you to program the vibrator’s motions. It learns what you like and what you don’t like and remembers it for future enjoyment.” Honest go God…that kind of technology makes my head spin.

4. We-Vibe. This is one of their bestsellers, and it seems pretty sweet. Part goes in you, part goes on you, he goes in you, everyone gets it on…holler!

5. Babe Lubette Sampler. I like small things I can tote around in my purse, like these little mini-lubes….cause you know a whole bottle of K-Y is just not going to fit in a girl’s wristlet when she goes out at night.

6. Super Cuffs. Hey, they’re even vegan!!

7. The Rabbit. Yeah, cause Sex and the City made it famous. Good enough for Charlotte York, good enough for me!

Now here’s the best part…if this blog generates the most comments of all the blog entries, one lucky reader will get a little Babeland gift card thrown her (or his) way. So…let’s get started! Click to comment and tell me about what you’ve done when it comes to toys–are you a newbie? Experienced? Do you use it with your boy? Do you have a favorite toy? Anything on Babeland make you wanna jump in bed with yourself? Does this idea completely freak you out? Am I going directly to Hell? Post anonymously or wave your flag high, but I want to hear from you! Let’s generate some good buzz (pun intended).

Have a lovely, sexy weekend everybody!

Although I’m usually the token ‘good girl,’ the bad girl inside me is kind of taken with the SaSi. Lordy.

Also, your past few posts seem to have theme…and who helped you with that AMAZING playlist? ;-)

Loved this post! (Can you believe that? haha)

I love this post, I would never have the balls to write it myself! but very informative. I have been meaning to hit up the babeland in nyc for sometime! in my last sexshop adventure, I was offered complimentary liquid virgin, which was recommended if I cheated on my boyfriend!
