Getting It: Having Great Jeans–The Denim Dilemma

by Rachel on 07/28/2009

Good morning!!

So, my shopping trip yesterday made me think about clothes. And weight loss. And the fact that every girl I know who is losing/trying to lose weight is constantly complaining about the fact that her closet is a mess. Nothing fits right and she can’t afford to buy new stuff every three pounds (which is all it takes sometimes to change a size, FYI). Ugh…dilemmas!

And I completely understand. This is why I haven’t worn jeans in ages! Mine are all either too big or too small, and I’ve been too cheap to buy new ones. And let’s face it–without great jeans, it’s tough to feel great. Even a dress-and-skirt girl like me sometimes just wants to toss on a pair of jeans. Instead of getting a new pair, I’ve been telling myself, “Oh well, my old jeans will fit soon if I just don’t eat that bagel or have that beer.” Which, ya know, is probably true, but having a constant battle in your head between bagels and blue jeans is not very fun.

Which is why, at some point, you have to decide that you’re going to dress the body you have, not the body you want. Sure it might cost you extra money for a pair of new jeans while you go from 12 to 6 (a good belt is crucial, but it will only take you so far), but wearing too-big clothes isn’t going to do you any favors!

If you’re working hard for a new body, you shouldn’t hide it. And even if your body isn’t where you want it to be yet, you shouldn’t fight it.

Treat each old pair of jeans not like a waste of money, but a waist victory. And look at each new pair of jeans like a reward! In five years, I’ve owned everything down the line from size 18s to size os. XL to XS. (To M. The people at my consignment shop love my story.) Some sizes I keep around, for the beer-and-bagel moments. Some sizes I know are OK to go.

You don’t have to get a new pair of True Religions each time you’re down a size. Get something altered! Get a cute pair of jeans from Target or on sale! Get something super trendy and cheap because you don’t plan on wearing it long (oh hey, Forever 21!!). But don’t put off feeling great in your Levis just to save a few dollars.

Speaking of, here’s a song I love to add to your workout today to remind you to keep at it so you can hang in your blue jeans and bang in your blue jeans.

“I step in my blue jeans, homewreck in my blue jeans. I got it from my mama so I’m blessed in my blue jeans.”
