Lemme Work It: National Tequila Weekend

by Rachel on 07/26/2009

Oh my goodness. I think I need to change the name of this blog to “Detoxing and Retoxing,” because that’s what I have been doing for the past two days.

Well National Tequila Day was quite an adventure! I went to Farmington Hills to see Kaitlin and decided to take the, um, scenic route. It took me an extra hour to get there! After that, I needed a stiff drink, so we went to Bahama Breeze and sat outside and drank sangria. For me, it doesn’t get much better than fruity wine outside! We snacked on appetizers, which were not at all healthy, but I did pay attention to my hunger and definitely didn’t overeat, so that was a win in my book.

After a quick trip to Target (officially making it a great day), we went back to Kaitlin’s and poured some wine–and I love Kait, but she poured some big, deep glasses. Jordan came over and we had an amazing little study abroad reunion. We had a lot of wine, but in the U.K. we were drinking at least a bottle each every night, so I have to say, we’ve cut back since then. We had some Twizzlers for dinner. I’m going to go ahead and say–just in case you were wondering–licorice is not a very healthy or substantial pre-cocktail meal.

After taking a lengthy break from the jug of wine, I headed over to Royal Oak for a double date night at the bar! This should have been a 20 minute drive. But because of construction on all the bridges to the highway I needed, I had to take a detour that took an hour and a half. I wanted to cry. Finally I made it…and of course, more drinks were waiting for me! Two overly strong Jack and Cokes were swishing around in my stomach when I remembered I needed to eat. I did, but was too late. Then came the tequila. And the beer. And the wine. And more tequila. It was so much fun.

But…turns out, I can’t drink like a sorority girl at MSU anymore. And I still can’t stop myself from saying inappropriate things when I do!! “You know, I’ve never had morning sex,” is not, as it turns out, the most romantic way to say, “Good night.”

When I woke up Saturday, I literally could not move for fear I’d throw up. I couldn’t even keep water down. Oh, National Tequila Day…I hate you…slash love you, because it was so, so fun. It took me several hours and a lot of water before I felt like a functioning human being again, and I got my standard hangover breakfast: a bagel with cream cheese and a green apple. Traditionally I finish this with a bag of Reese’s Pieces, so I’m going to call this a successful healthy (ish) meal since I did not!

I spent the rest of the day on the couch. “Mad Men” and blogs were my only plans. I did discover, however, that there are tons of fun wedding videos on YouTube, so that entertained me for a few hours. The h-over was gone, but the lack of sleep left me pretty much out of commission. My mom said she’d make grilled chicken and broccoli for dinner; I was forced to inform her that I was too hungover to eat fresh vegetables. That was a low moment for me, but she took advantage of my weakened state and ordered Jimmy Johns (which was absolutely disgusting, by the way.) I went to bed early because I was feeling like a risk to myself and others.

Thank goodness I woke up feeling like my old self again! I made Lazy Sunday French Toast and a big bowl of grapes and strawbs for breakfast, and read the Wedding Pages and Post Secret while sipping coffee. This is my favorite Sunday ritual. And then began the detox: it was gym time!!!

Does anyone else find that when they have spent a night doing not so healthy things, your body literally aches the next day? (And your boobs hurt no matter how good of a sports bra you wear? Or is that just me?) My muscles were a little slow to start. (And I had to start them with a RUN from the car to the gym; it was raining unbelievably hard.) Still, I managed to crank out a mile and a half run with intervals, a climb, and 10 minutes on the elliptical. I felt so much better after–I literally ran to my car because the sun was shining and I had my energy back!

It’s SO good to be back on track. For lunch I had Amy’s black bean soup with some sliced turkey, Food Should Taste Good tortilla chips, and cucumber slices.

I have a lot of wonderful things planned this afternoon: a friend coffee date and then a girls’ dinner out with three of my friends from high school! We’re taking a little road trip to a tapas place called Sangria, so you can imagine what kind of boner that gives a girl like me. One friend just got her personal trainer cert, one is leaving for law school in two weeks, and the other just got a clean bill of health after her most recent cancer scan. So much to toast to!
