Good afternoon! I hope your day is lovely so far.
Right now, I am imagining a summer like I am used to will be back soon. It’s very cool today–it feels more like October than July! The sun keeps coming and going too. Depressing!
After yesterday’s sixty minute spin class, I did not feel my best. I kept thinking I didn’t eat enough carbs, but I wasn’t hungry. I spent the whole afternoon on the couch feeling like my brain was fried. This fuzzy feeling has happened to me before after really tough classes, so I wasn’t too worried, but I still didn’t like how I felt. I didn’t have any appetite, but I had some eggs and toast for dinner because I couldn’t imagine that not eating would be the right thing to do. After finishing the second Entourage disc, I just went to bed.
I woke up feeling much better! A little extra sleep never hurts. I was seriously craving oatmeal, so I made oats with yogurt, almond butter, and a few lone strawberries (we had no banans or blueberries) before I went off to the gym with my mom. As I was filling up my water bottle it occurred to me that the problem with my workout yesterday wasn’t how I ate…it was probably how I drank.
Even though I had a water bottle, I was sweating buckets for 60 minutes; I’m pretty sure I just got deyhdrated. I remembered that I just read in my PT book you need to use an electrolyte replacement beverage for 60 minutes or more of activity. I’m not a fan of Gatorade and all its friends, but I should have had coconut water after the class instead of before. I think sometimes I have to remember that a daily workout can be as intense (or more so) that some people’s “race days.” I’d never tell someone to So that’s something to keep in mind! I’ll definitely be fueling up differently during my next session with Harry.
This morning, feeling rested and hydrated, I was fine to get busy at the gym. I warmed up on the track, and it was really nice to get off the treadmill for a little while. I ran one 10-minute mile, then hit the StairClimber for five minutes, but wasn’t really feeling it. I ran for another five, did 25 steady minutes on the elliptical, and then finished off with five minutes of drills on the gym floor. My mom did the recumbent bike and then walked on the track. Pretty good workouts all around!
After that we had to stop at the grocery store. I just wanted some peppers and apples for today, but it turned into kind of a major trip because our fridge was full of outdated leftovers and we had nothing fresh! There were some good sales too; here are some of the things we bought:
- Cherries (on sale! yay!)
- Broccoli
- A lot of bananas (we go through them so fast!)
- Organic apples and pears
- Chicken breasts
- Whole wheat bread (as opposed to the “5 Grain” glorified white bread my mom usually buys)
- Amy’s black bean soup, as well as some other organic soups to try
- Kashi Fiery Fiesta pilaf (I am in love with this stuff; it takes 60 seconds in the microwave and it’s delicious)
- Newman’s Own Lighten Up! Light Lime Vinaigrette
- A whole pineapple
That Newman’s Own Lime Vinaigrette has been on my to-try list for a month, but I had yet to find it anywhere! I was excited about that! The whole pineapple was a last minute addition to the cart. I was buying a small container of cut pineapple for $3, which is outrageous, I know, but I’m not adept at cutting a pineapple. My mom told me it was too expensive; I said I would only buy whole pineapple if she bought me the pineapple cutter I had seen online. She agreed to go buy it today and so I swapped the pineapple chunks for this monstrous prickly yellow thing!
We had made a deal (my mom and I make a lot of deals) that we weren’t going to go grocery shopping until something was done about the fridge. Basically, my mom and grandma save the dumbest leftovers in inefficient ways (why do you use aluminum foil when you can’t see what’s in it and I keep buying GladWare?), don’t throw things out when there’s literally one bite or sip left, and buy a lot of unhealthy, unnecessary crap. This makes the fridge resemble some sort of inner city drug house. But then I buy a carton of fresh strawberries and a bottle of kefir, and suddenly it’s my shit that’s to blame. I cleaned it out last week, but it was somehow full again. So when we came home with the groceries, I just went to town on that thing. I tossed old salad dressing, month-old juice, barely-there chocolate sauce, old cottage cheese, as well as some unhealthy stuff I’m hoping no one will notice/miss. It was cathartic–now there’s plenty of room for healthy goodies!
I also decided to make a new chicken recipe with my lime vinaigrette! It was so simple: one large chicken breast (with two servings of chicken), 2 tbsp of Newman’s, 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar, and about a teaspoon of Caribbean jerk seasoning. I let it marinate while I was thrashing through the fridge, and then grilled it when I was done.
I made another bowl, but I tried to mix it up a little to break food boredom. The new chicken recipe was amazing and perfect! Gotta love Newman’s Own, you know? Then I used red and green pepper, white onions, black beans, Food Should Taste Good jalapeno chips, hot sauce, and diced avocado. I used Garden Fresh salsa instead of my usual, and this made the difference. I forgot how much I used to love Garden Fresh in college! It made the bowl taste super fresh (duh) because it’s not as wet and runny as other salsas. It was a great lunch! My uncle called and said he made me more Amazing Salsa–I told him I’d pay him $5, so that might be why–so I’ll probably have the same thing tomorrow.

I was freezing when I finished because I was still wet from the gym and it’s like 60 degrees outside, so I finished off with some hot mango black tea and (seriously, I’m living on the edge) a gala apple.

I have a feeling I’m not going to get much done today in the way of studying. I have to do laundry, shower, and I have tennis tonight at 5:30. I bought the new Glamour today at the grocery store, and, not gonna lie, I’d much rather read about the best jeans than giving a client a health assessment.
Peace out!
