Sunday Dinner: Homemade Pizza

by Rachel on 06/14/2009

Ahhh tonight was my first foray into pizza dough made from scratch…what an event!

I decided that my brother Preston could be my special helper for this pizza extravaganza.

I always, always cook in my apron!

I got the dough recipe from Eat, Live, Run, and I was drawn to it because it had so few ingredients. I was making four pizzas of varying sizes: a large one for my mom, uncle, and grandma, a smaller one for me, and two mini ones for my brother and cousin. I mixed up the dough (which was super easy, by the way), and then worried I probably made too much.

It expands quite a bit.

Luckily, the doubled recipe was a good amount for my multi-pizza dinner! It would definitely make two large pizzas (or three/four if you rolled them a little thinner, which I wish I had done) and you can always freeze leftover dough.

The sauce was from Trader Joes (fresh, not jarred) and it smelled delicious. I topped all of the dough differently: ham and cheese for the kids; ham, cheese, and veggies for the adults; and fresh mozzarella, basil, and veggies for me! Preston helped by rolling out the dough with me and tasting all the ingredients first.

Then I baked them at 425 degrees for about 15 minutes, and mixed up a big green salad while they were in the oven. The weather was gorgeous, so we ate outside. It was perfect!

This is definitely something worth making from scratch. Making the dough yourself really doesn’t take much effort, but it pays off in the taste…if you love carbs (and I love carbs), this is the way to go. The crust was so thick and fluffy that I could only finish half of my pizza!

This would be a great recipe to make for your boyf on date night or on Girls Night (if you’re single like me). The homemade crust makes it seem like you slaved away for hours, but really, it’s 5 minutes with a hand mixer and you’re all set! A little wine would dress it up and it’s nice to indulge knowing you’re enjoying all-natural ingredients. I’m pretty much in the most pleasant whole-grain carb stupor right now. I can only imagine that a wine buzz would make this a meal fit for God himself.

You did the skinny arm in a picture with your little brother.

I can’t say that I’m not proud.

You should definetly try using the pizza dough for Pizza on the Grill! We got directions from Everyday Food, but this recipe is similar, technique wise:

Ahh I have heard you can grill pizza but I wasn’t quite sure how. That looks AMAZING…I can’t wait to try it!
