Shed Tip: Practice the Rhythm Method

by Rachel on 05/29/2009

I love my spinning instructor, Ken. He reminds me of RuPaul out of drag: beautiful, beautiful body, sexy, throaty voice, and a great laugh and sense of humor. He’s one of the best in town and his classes are always packed. But one thing I learned from his class is to do rhythm-based workouts. Change your resistance so that you’re moving your feet to the music (this works best on a bike or elliptical trainer).

You can create a playlist that forces you to vary your pace by incorporating songs with different BPMs (beats per minute). A slow and steady song like Kanye West “Amazing,” forces you to slow down and climb a hill, while a song like Britney Spears, “Toxic” will have you running for your life. A song with a fast refrain, like The Veronicas “Untouched” is great for intervals. Make a playlist that incorporates a mix of songs and plan to change your incline and resistance to whatever goes with the music!

In Kenny’s spin classes, he always chants, “My hands. Your feet,” to remind us to stay on the beat. If our feet are too fast, the resistance is too low. He also encourages us to get into it–when a sexy song is on, and we’re moving our legs Ohhh sooo slow to match the dirty lyrics, you can’t help but feel a little somethin’ somethin’!
