Gaga for Google

Have you discovered Google calendars yet? This is my new favorite fitness tool. If you don’t have gmail, um, get it! Then you’ll see the “calendars” option on your gmail page. You start with a blank calendar and can not only add appointments, but can also color-code them so different categories are different colors.

This was exactly what I needed for my workouts. Depending on your fitness plan, you can make calendars to track your workouts, progress, etc. You can make a different calendar for each workout, and display all or several on the same page. And you can color code them. This is where I get a little turned on. I love superior organization and bright colors. Your “cardio” calendar can be purple and your “strength” calendar can be yellow.

What I like to do on my calendar is schedule my workouts for a specific time (even if I don’t do it at the correct time, it’s still on there). This, for me, makes it official. What am I doing this weekend? Google says running! Google will even give a reminder: Spin class, 15 minutes! Once I’ve completed a session, I edit the event’s time to be “all day.” You will see that this changes the event’s appearance on the calendar–it goes from purple type to encased in a purple bubble. For me, it’s like a gold star to change my scheduled workouts to completed ones.

You can also add milestones and goals to your calendar. Things like “HALFWAY POINT” or “OMG two weeks till wedding!” help you see the big picture. It’s great to take it day by day, but putting it in perspective–seeing your progressing and looking toward your goals–can be an excellent motivator.
